Seoul National University was founded in October 15, 1946 by merging 10 schools in Seoul area based on "The law concerning the foundation of Seoul National University" (국립서울대학� 설립� 관한 법령).

A number 1 president was Harry B. Ansted.

A college of law was founded by merging a law department of Gyeongseong University with Gyeongseong Law College (경성법학전문학�).

A university's 2nd president was Lee Chunho(�춘호, �春昊), who served from either October 1947.

A university absorbed Seoul College of Pharmacy (서울약학대학) inside September, 1950, as a College of Pharmacy. This experienced antecedently been the personal institution.

In a period of the Korean War, the university was temporarily merged by having more universities around South Korea at Pusan.

Originally, a independent campus was placed in Daehangno (University Street) in the Jongno-gu District. Virtually all arethe of the university relocated to a freshly campus within Gwanak-gu in 1975. A campus in the Jongno-gu District is now a medical campus, known as a Yongon Campus.

Gwanak Campus, a independent campus, is placed on the southern a portion of Seoul. These are served by its have station on Line 2 (the Green Line) of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway. Yeongeon Campus (a medical campus), is located in downtown Seoul. Suwon Campus (a farming campus), is located in Suwon, about 40 kilometre south of Seoul. A farming campus moved to Gwanak 2004 fall.
